Tomorrow afternoon, Matthew “Spamboy” McGarity will demonstrate how to create local WordPress installations.

You are encouraged to follow along and create one on your own system, if you wish. However, there’s one thing you’ll need to do before tomorrow: install a software package that provides you with PHP and Apache & MySQL servers.

Depending on your computer’s OS, install one of the following easy (and free) options using instructions available on their websites:

Windows: either XAMPP (recommended) or WAMP Server. You can install it on your computer or an external media device (USB stick, etc.)

Mac: either XAMPP or MAMP (recommended). These must be installed in your computer’s Applications folder

The reason you are being asked to do this beforehand is to save time — it takes 15-20 minutes to download and install either package, while Spamboy’s presentation lasts only 30 minutes long. This way, you can hit the ground running!

As soon as we announced that WordCamp had sold out, we got a flurry of requests from people who really need to attend but who for various reasons did not register in time.

As a result of these requests, we’ve opened up 25 additional slots which are available right now. These are the last slots that we can accomodate, so when they are gone we simply can’t do any more. So, if you’re trying to get in, it is important to register as fast as possible.

The good news is, even if you are not able to get into the event physically, we’re planning to live stream all the presentations, so you should be able to participate remotely. In addition, we’ll be filming the speakers and we’ll make videos available after the event is over.

Well folks, we did it! 300 attendees will pack UTD’s Davisdon auditorium, so I hope everyone comes early because the lecture hall will have every seat filled!

If for some reason you know of someone who wasn’t able to get registered but who desperately needs to be there, please contact us and we’ll evaluate each individual on a case by case basis. But keep in mind that it is not to anyone’s benefit for us to oversubscribe the event and cause all to suffer, so it’s unlikely we’ll be able to accomodate late registrations.

To those of you who managed to get in, we’re looking forward to seeing you in just a few days!

Well folks, I hope you love the official 2009 WordCamp Dallas Logo as much as I do! We asked George Learned to tackle the task of giving us something exquisite that could put WCD on the map with everyone else in terms of our T-shirt design, and I think he has… but you’re going to have to wait and see them at the event!

However, you do get a sneak preview by taking a look at part of the design with our WordCamp Dallas Brand!

These two middle ones are transparent PNGs. They are working great on a white background, but having a little difficulty with the darker one. We’ll see if we can add some tomorrow that work on the darker backgrounds too.

George gave us several variants of the logo to use in blog posts, etc, and now I just can’t wait to see what you guys are going to be able to do with these to spice them up even more!

Please show lots of love to George for his efforts. He really spent a ton of time on this, and I don’t know about you, but I LOVE it!

Cheers,

John P.

Hey WordCampers, we’ve got another huge treat for the few of you who can make this one…

On the afternoon of Friday June 26, we’ve been extended a very special, and very limited, offer by our friends at the University of Texas at Dallas. We are going to have three back to back campus tours available ONLY for WordCamp Dallas attendees to learn about some of the cutting edge research being developed by the brainiacs at UTD.

These tours will make for excellent blogging material I’m sure, and you’ll have unrestricted access to the program directors! So bring your cameras and notepads… Each of the tours we’ve been offered will be headed by the program director and will be limited to 15 bloggers.

Since there is really no better way, if you are interested in attending one or more of these tours please leave a comment below. Since there are so many attendees and so few slots, please list the order of preference for the tours you want, and we’ll let you know as soon as we’ve made the list of attendees.

TOUR 1) 1:30-2:30 Tour of Arts and Technology (ATEC) and Emerging Media and Communications (EMAC)

Hosted by Dr. Tom Linehan, Director of the Institute for Interactive Arts and Engineering. Facilitated by Dean Terry (Mobile Innovation Lab), David Parry, Monica Evans (Game Lab), Frank Dufour (Digital Sound Lab) and Midori Kitagawa (Motion Capture Lab)

Motion Capture Lab

The ATEC program houses one of the most sophisticated Motion Capture laboratories in the nation. Sixteen cameras mounted on the wall surround a 40 square foot performance space where lights strobe 220 times per second to capture the movement of up to six people at one time. Action captured in digital format provides students, university partners and researchers the opportunity to use motion path data to create animated sequences, virtual environments and simulation exercises and biomedical research.

Digital Sound Lab

Housing some of the latest innovations in sound design, the ATEC Digital Sound Lab enables students to explore the fundamental science of sound in a technologically sophisticated environment. The Lab features a sound proof booth with accommodations for three actors and a digital workstation with complete surround sound as well as pre-mixing and editing capabilities.

Mobile Innovation Lab

The MobileLab serves as a central hub for interdisciplinary research and innovation in mobile space. Areas of research include mobile content and user experience, augmented reality, real time ad hoc social networks, GPS/LBS games and applications, user-generated meta-media content, and interfaces with web-based virtual worlds.

Meet in ATEC Conference Room 1.606 (look for the Building next to the large freestanding Antenna)
Tour limited to 15

TOUR 2) 2:30-3:30 Tour of Natural Science and Engineering Research Laboratory (NSERL) Building

Hosted by Dr. Bruce Gnade, Vice President for Research
The colorful shingles that cover 15 percent of the NSERL Building’s surface may look like snakeskin, but the “scales” are actually overlapping, anodized stainless steel pieces that reflect the array of light from green to purple throughout the day. The interior space houses no classrooms, opting instead to incorporate large open lab space with specialty labs and linear equipment rooms to promote interdisciplinary collaborations. The 192,000 square foot research facility opened in June 2007.

Meet in the lobby of the building
Tour limited to 15

TOUR 3) 3:30-4:30 Tour of GPS/GIS: It’s More than a Way to Get There

Join Dr. Stuart Murchison to get a glimpse of the Geospatial Information Science research underway at UT Dallas and learn how it is revolutionizing traditional disciplines.

Powerful new technologies have emerged in recent years that greatly improve our ability to collect, store, manage, analyze, and utilize information regarding the features of the Earth’s surface and to combine these with other types of economic, social and environmental information.
These technologies include geographic information systems (GIS), the global positioning system (GPS), geospatial statistics and remote sensing techniques. They now penetrate every aspect of our lives from digital maps in vehicles to the management and maintenance of city infrastructure, regional agriculture, forest lands, and a myriad of global and space uses.

Meet at 2:30 p.m. in the lobby of Green Hall.

We’ve finalized the plans for the WordCamp Dallas 2009 Welcome Party. We’ll be getting together at the AMF Richardson Lanes on Friday night for an evening of bowling, beer and buddies!

The AMF Bowling alley is essentially just down the road from the UTD campus where we are holding WordCamp, on the NorthWest corner of Campbell and I-75 directly behind Cafe Brazil. We’ll be meeting there as early as 7:00pm and we have lanes reserved for bowling from 8:00-10:00pm. Food, drinks, shoes… it’s all included, so you just need to get there!

Here is a map to the AMF lanes. If you have any trouble finding it just give them a call at (972) 231-2695. The address is:
2101 N. Central Expressway Richardson, TX 75080

The Welcome Party is only open to registered attendees, so if you want to bring a guest it’s no problem, but please get them registered so we can make sure they are on the attendee list.

Also, keep an eye out for an EVite invitation and please respond as soon as you can so we can give the bowling alley an accurate count (which they require). Thanks!
